Shelley Berkley
Recently, Shelley Berkley finished her tenure as the Senior Vice President of the Touro University system. Before this, she held the positions of CEO and Senior Provost at Touro University Western Division for a period of eight-and-a-half years.
During her time in Congress, Shelley made significant contributions, serving on various committees like Transportation, Small Business, Veterans Affairs, Foreign Affairs, and the powerful Ways and Means Committee with a focus on healthcare. Among her proudest accomplishments was establishing the new Veterans Administration medical complex in Southern Nevada and advocating for funding for graduate medical education and healthcare system reform.
Shelley was a strong supporter of Israel in Congress, leaving a lasting impact on resolutions, legislation, and debates concerning the Middle East. Her political career began in 1983 as an assemblywoman in the Nevada State Legislature, where she worked on consumer protection laws and combating drunk driving, creating the Senior Law Project and the Lemon Law.
Before entering politics, Shelley worked as a practicing attorney, representing the Nevada State Commerce Department, Southwest Gas Corporation, and the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. She is married to Dr. Larry Lehrner, a kidney specialist, and has two sons and two stepchildren.
Shelley's upbringing in Las Vegas shaped her journey as the first college graduate in her family, obtaining a degree from UNLV in 1973, where she also served as student body president. Throughout her career, Shelley Berkley has been a dedicated public servant and advocate for her community, making significant contributions to healthcare, education, and foreign affairs.
